Women In Sports

Gender discrimination in sports has long been a topic of controversy, right from 1896 when the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, said, “No matter how toughened a sportswoman may be, her organism is not cut out to sustain certain shocks.” While gender equality in sports has come a long way since then, the weightage that female sports carry in comparison to their male counterparts leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Percentage of women among sport participants: 40%

  • Percentage of coverage women’s sports receive: 2-4%

  • Percentage of women in sports who face gender discrimination: 40%

  • Gender pay gap in sports is, on average, larger than one finds in politics, academia, business and medicine.
